Baron Ralph Greystoke (18 Oct 1353 – 06 Apr 1418)[2]
Contents |
Per ODNB: Much of his early adult life in the 1370s and 1380s was spent serving the king in the far north of England, as warden of the west or east marches (or both), at a time when Anglo-Scottish relations were frequently in turmoil. On one occasion, he was captured near the border fortress of Roxburgh and taken in triumph to Dunbar. By the later 1390s, however, he had become disillusioned with the government of Richard II. When the exiled Henry Bolingbroke, earl of Derby, returned to England in 1399, Greystoke joined him at Doncaster and, shortly afterwards, backed his seizure of the throne as Henry IV. Thereafter he remained active in border politics and warfare, most notably in September 1402 when he joined Henry Percy, earl of Northumberland, his son Henry (Hotspur), and Henry, Lord Fitzhugh, in defeating a Scottish army at Homildon Hill in Northumberland.
