Biography

Sigramn (or Sigram, sometimes written as Sigrand) and Landrada are named as the parents of Chrodegang, Archbishop of Metz in the Gesta Episcopis Mettensibus by Paul the Deacon, (Chrodegangus ... patre Sigramno, matre Landrada) [1] but nothing more is known about them. Chrodegang is named as originating from the Pagus Haspengau (Hesbaye) (ex pago Hasbaniensi oriunud) and Sigram is often called Count of Hesbaye[2]but he is not given the title of Count by Paul the Deacon.[1]

There are no birth, death or marriage dates known for Sigram, but Stewart Baldwin states that he "perhaps flourished in the early eighth century."[3] Given his son Chrodegang was appointed Archbishop in 742[3] this would place his birth about 710 and Sigram's as about 685.

In the Chronicon Laureshamense a Count Cancor, son of Williswinda and Count Robert was a relative, perhaps cousin, of Chrodegang but how they might be related is not stated. One theory is that Sigram, Chrodegang's father, is a brother of Robert[2] but based on name parts if seems more likely that it is Landrada who related to the Robertien family, perhaps a sister of Count Robert.[4]

Children

As well as Chrodegang, Sigram is most likely the father of [3]

  1. Gundeland, abbot of Lorsch
  2. Unnamed son, father of Ingram
