Biography

Maud de Lacy, was the daughter of Gilbert de Lacy of Ewyas Lacy and Weobley, Herefordshire and Isabel le Bigod.[1][2][3] Her birth date is uncertain, but her father died a little before 25 December 1230,[4][5] so she was almost certainly born before 1231.

In the period 1238-1241 Maud became heir to her brother Walter de Lacy.[1][2] In 1241 she was co-heiress to her grandfather, also called Walter de Lacy, inheriting half the barony of Weobley, Herefordshire.[1][2][6]

Maud married twice. Her first husband was Peter of Geneva.[6] They wed before 12 March 1544. They had a daughter and a son who both died in infancy. Peter died in 1249.[1][2][6]

Before 8 August 1252 Maud married again, her second husband being Geoffrey de Geneville/Joinville.[1][2][6][7] They had ten children:

Maud accompanied her second husband to Lorraine: in 1280 they appointed attorneys to handle their English affairs while they went there.[1][2]

In 1252 Maud and Geoffrey de Geneville had livery of the customs and liberties which her grandfather Walter de Lacy had enjoyed at Meath, Ireland. Two years later they had livery of Trim Castle, Ireland.[1][2][3]

In 1283 she and her second husband transferred their lands in England and Wales to their son Peter,[1][2][6] including Ludlow Castle and half the vill of Ludlow, Shropshire; Stanton Lacy, Shropshire; Mandel Lacy and Wolforlowe, Herefordshire; and Ewyas, Herefordshire.[3][9][10]

In 1302 the liberties of Trim and Meath - which had been confiscated by Edward I for content- were restored to Maud and Geoffrey de Geneville.[1][2][3][11]

Maud died on 11 April 1304.[1][2][3]

Research Notes

The Annales Hiberniae give Maud's death year as 1302.[12] Cokayne indicates that the year is erroneous.[3]

Marriage date to first husband needs correcting "They wed before 12 March 1544."

Birth in Meath, Ireland seems unlikely. He family came from Herefordshire and her first marriage was in England
I have removed the birthplace. She was a great-granddaughter of Strongbow, so there were family links with Ireland, and her marriage portion included lands in Ireland. This profile is on the long list of profiles managed by the Magna Carta Project that need an overhaul, and when that is done, research can be undertaken to see if anything can be said about where she was born. If anyone wants to research this sooner, great!

This profile had been identified as being on a Magna Carta Trail from Gateway Ancestor Thomas Lloyd to several surety barons. I will soon be adding the Magna Carta Project as a co-manager of this profile in order to track the trail. Thanks.

De Lacy-178 and Lacy-216 do not represent the same person because: wrong centuries
Enno, Dates of birth and death are correct on the Lacy-216 profile. Thanks!
