Elizabeth, who married Robert Russell[2] and is referred to as his eldest daughter in his will[3]
Agnes,[2] who married Thomas Winslow and is referred to as his second daughter in his will[3]
Margaret, who married John Rowse[2] and is referred to as his third daughter in his will[3]
A daughter who married Robert Gifford (not listed in the Visitation, but her husband is named in John Throckmorton's will, where she is said to be his fourth daughter[3] She is named as Jane in Wedgwood's History of Parliament, and said to have gone on to marry Drewe Barentyne and then John Marny.[4][5]
Matilda, who married Thomas Greene[2] and is referred to as his fifth daughter in his will[3]
Eleanor, who married Richard Knightley[2] and is referred to as his sixth daughter on his will[3]
She was named as "my wife, Eleanor" in the 1445 will of her husband. [6]
Eleanor procured letters of confraternity from the prior and chapter of Christ Church, Canterbury, for herself , John and their sons. In 1448 she obtained letters patent, granted in consideration of Throckmorton’s loyal service to each of the 3 Lancastrian kings, to found chantries at Fladbury, Worcestershire and in the monastic churches of Pershore and Evesham, in which prayers were to be said for the King and queen, and masses celebrated for the souls of John, his parents, Henry IV, Henry V and Queen Katherine. [7] The chantry was dissolved in 1549.
A brass memorial in the church at Fladbury commemorates Eleanor and her husband John.
Johannes Throkmorton et Alianora uxor ejus at Thomas filius eorum. Johannes fuit sub thesaurarius Angliae qui vero obijt vicesimo tertio die Aprilis anno domini millmo CCCC XLV. Quorum animabus pro-picietur deus. Amen
John Throckmorton and Eleanor his wife, & Thomas their son. John was Under-Treasurer of England, who died the 23rd day of April in the year of our Lord 1445. On whose souls may God have mercy. Amen
Research Notes
It is unlikely to impossible that Eleanor was also the wife of John Bellers. According to History of Parliament, Bellers was last known to be living in 1414 and deceased by 1421, at which time his son John was a ward of John Mowbray and Bellers's wife had remarried to Thomas Seagrave. In comparison, Eleanor is mentioned as her husband John Throckmorton's wife and chief executor in his will in 1445, and according to History of Parliament they married circa 1409. This timeline means that Eleanor could not have been married to both John Throckmorton and John Bellers, and while there is clear evidence that she was certainly married to Throckmorton, there is none currently that links her to Bellers. Eleanor's profile has been disconnected from Bellers's based on this conclusion, and a reliable source should be provided before the two are connected again in the future. It is highly unlikely she was two years older than her husband and waited until age 29 to get married. FamilySearch, Find-a-Grave and Geni notes all have a birth year of (c.) 1385.
Hello! I'm planning to review and do a bit of work on Eleanor's profile on behalf of the England Project, and I've spotted a potential discrepancy I'd appreciate some dialogue about.
I personally believe that it's unlikely that Eleanor was also the wife of John Bellers. Bellers is last known living in 1414, and believed likely dead by 1421 when his son John was a ward of John Mowbray while his wife remarried to Thomas Seagrave; in comparison, Eleanor is mentioned as her husband John Throckmorton's wife and chief executor in his will in 1445 having married him c.1409 according to History of Parliament Online.
Is there any evidence that disputes this, and connects John Bellars to Eleanor? Please let me know, so I know whether Eleanor and John Bellers should be linked or if they should be disconnected.
I don't have Belers or Bellers in my Ancestry tree at all so I must have at some point come to the same conclusion and removed her and hadn't remembered to do the same in Wikitree..
Thanks for such a speedy response, Frances! I'll wait for a week or so to give the other Profile Managers a chance to respond if they have any evidence, but if there doesn't seem to be any (response or evidence) I'll disconnect John Bellers then :)
De la Spine-31 and DeLaSpine-2 appear to represent the same person because: I suggest Spyne, as spelling of surname (following usage employed in History of Parliament).
Eleanor Spyne, daughter of Guy Spyne of Coughton, MP. Married John Throckmorton 1409.
DeLaSpine-5 and De La Spine-3 appear to represent the same person because: Alice Spyne (or Spine), daughter of Guy Spyne of Coughton, Warws. MP. Alice Spyne married Sir William Tracy of Toddington.
