In the reign of King John, he received lands from Hugh Massey and his daughter Margery, viz. the whole lordship of Stretford, to be held of William de Ferrers, Earl of Derby. He also obtained a grant of lands in Stretford from Richard fitzAde de Urmston, as well as lands in other places.
"In the troubled times of the Baronial wars with King John, he divided his land between his elder son Henry and younger son Geoffrey. Henry got the lands of Trafford, Stretford and the whole of the lands near Manchester (which had then become of considerable extent), while Geoffrey received the manors of Chadderton (Catherton) and Foxdenton."
