Biography

Birth and Parentage

Thebaud (or Tebaud) de Verdun, Knight, 2nd Lord Verdun, hereditary Constable of Ireland, of Alton, Staffordshire, Weobley, Herefordshire, Farnham Verdon, Buckinghamshire, Brandon and Bretford (in Wolston), Warwickshire, Wilsford, Wiltshire, etc., Justiciar of Ireland, second but first surviving son and heir, was born 8 Sep 1278.[1] He was the son and heir of Sir Thebaud de Verdun,[2] 1st Lord Verdun, and Margery de Bohun[1] and was born at Alton, Staffordshire, England, where the family had lands.[1]

Life

Thebaud was knighted by the King in Northumberland on 24 Jun 1298 and fought in the second line at the Battle of Falkirk on 22 Jul 1298.[1][2][3]

He was summoned to Parliament from 29 Dec 1299 to 16 Oct 1315 by writs directed to Theobaldo de Verdun junior. These summonses are regarded as giving him the title Lord Verdun.[1][2]

He was Justiciar of Ireland from 30 April 1313 to January 1314/5.[2][4]

Marriages and Children

He married first, at Wigmore, Herefordshire on 29 Jul 1302 to Maud de Mortimer, daughter of Edmund de Mortimer, Knight, 1st Lord Mortimer, by Margaret, daughter of Sir William de Fiennes.[1][2] They had the following children:

  • Joan, born 9 (or 11) Aug 1303, died 2 Oct 1334, married 1st in 1317 to John de Montagu (no issue), and 2nd in 1318 to Sir Thomas de Furnival, 2nd Lord Furnival, 5 children;[1][1][2]
  • Elizabeth, married Sir Bartholomew de Burghersh;[1]
  • Margery, married 1st to Sir William le Blount, 2nd to Sir Mark Husee, and third to Sir John de Crophill;[1]
  • [allegedly] Katherine.[1]

Maud died after childbirth at Alton, Staffordshire on 17 or 18 Sep 1312 and was buried in Croxden Abbey, Staffordshire.[1][2]

Thebaud married second on 4 Feb 1315/6 near Bristol (without the king's license) to Elizabeth de Clare, widow of John de Burgh (d. 18 Jun 1313), and daughter of Sir Gilbert de Clare, Earl of Gloucester and Hertford, by his second wife, Joan of Acre, daughter of Edward I, King of England.[1][1][2][5] Sir Thebaud and Elizabeth had one daughter:

  • Isabella, married Henry de Ferrers, 2nd Lord Ferrers of Groby.[1] She was born some 8 months after her father's death.[6]

Death

Sir Thebaud de Verdun died testate[1] at Alton, Staffordshire on 27 Jul 1316[1][2] and was buried at Croxden Abbey, Staffordshire.[1][2] He is said to have died of typhoid.[6] His widow married (3rd) before 3 May 1317 to Roger Damory.[1]

Thebaud left no male heir, but had three daughters from his first marriage, and a posthumous daughter from his second and the Verdun estates were accordingly partitioned among the four co-heiresses and their husbands. See "Calendar of Inquisitions" for more information.[7]

Please don't use the volumes of the 1st edition of Cokayne's The Complete Peerage as a source, they have been totally superseded by the second edition, which are all available from FamilySearch Catalog https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/271412?availability=Family%20History%20Library and probably other places. The Verdun barons are in Vol 12, pt 2.
