Biography

Birth and Parentage

Robert de Vipont was born about 1234 (came of age c. 1254/6), the son and heir of John de Vipont and his wife Sibyl de Ferrers. His father died shortly before 25 Jul 1241.[1]

Marriage and Issue

After 19 Nov 1242, Robert married Isabel FitzJohn, daughter of Sir John Fitz Geoffrey, Knt., and his wife Isabel Bigod. They had two children:[1]

1) Isabel, b. abt 1251, m. Roger de Clifford
2) Idoine, b. abt 1259, m. Roger de Leybourne

In 1257, "John de Gravenel (Matilda de Bussey's grandson) made an agreement with Robert (each holding a moiety of Buckland), by which John granted his moiety of the manor to Robert and his heirs for ever, while Robert then granted to John the whole manor, presumably to hold for life only, since it afterwards passed to Robert's two daughters & heirs, Isabel and Idonea." (Ref: BHO)

In 1258 he sued Walter, parson of Newbigging, for poaching in his deer park. The same year he fought in Wales. He was one of the most violent of the Barons in arms against King Henry III. In 1263 he excused his absence as plaintiff in a plea in Westmorland on the ground of infirmity.[1] He died from wounds received in battle. (Ref: MCA)
