Biography

PHOTO - Unfortunately a photo has been mistakenly identified as John Henry Debar, and widely circulated on the internet. This photo seems to have originally identified as Orson Debar/DeBarr a member of a completely different Debar family! (John A. Debarr of Cayuga New York).
'John Henry DeBar, a French-Canadian trapper, discovered the pond while on a hunting expedition in 1817. His son Lyman and his grandson George were rated as two of the best guides in Franklin County. Both the Debar pond and the majestic Debar Mountain were given the family name. :Debar Mountain ( 44,36.366 N ,-74,12.983 W , Elevation 3175 ) located approx 6 miles SE of Duane Center in Franklin county ( 2 miles SWS of Baldface Mtn.) BIRTH & SURNAME - his birthplace is recorded as Canada E -- this meant Quebec. He was French-Canadian. His date of birth is between 1782-1790. Surname may have been Debar or Tiebert/Thiebert which was anglicized to Debar.

ELEVEN OR MORE CHILDREN? The 1840 census counted twelve people in the household, 2 adults and 10 children. One child, Mary, was born after 1840. The older children were born in Vermont, according to census records. They younger children in Franklin County, NY.

PROOF OF CHILDREN'S NAMES: Five children have been confirmed by census and court records. Four children were listed on the 1850 census residing with their parents: Lyman, William, George, and Mary. The 1864 probate of William Debar (son of John Henry) mentions siblings Lyman Debar, Rosetta Debar Tucker and Mary Debar.
CONFUSED JUMBLED ONLINE TREES! Many online trees have a listing of many children - sixteen or so - for John Henry and Margaret Debar. It appears that trees have combined children from two different, unrelated families! Many have included children that actually belonged in the family of John A. Debar/Debarr of Cayuga New York. Several of this "children" have records that show their birth in Cayuga County, New York, and belong in the Cayuga Debarr family.
DEATH - His death was recorded in the 1860 Mortality Schedule for Duane, Franklin, NY. John Debar, widowed, Place of birth: Canada, Farmer, Cause of death Palsy, age 78. date of death March 1860. (calculated date of birth: 1860-78 = 1782)
