NI0973"Rose was born Nov. 12, 1883 in Ozaukee Co, WI, the oldest daughter of Anna Kraus and Mathias B. TOECKES. Some time in 1909 she began corresponding with Matt Decker as evidenced by a postcard addressed to Math Decker, The Arlington Hotel, Akron, Ohio from R.M.T. dated Mar. 19, 1909 (postmarked Random Lake, WI). She writes:
"Dear friend,
Arrived here today. Will go back Monday. Am all in, down and out. This is the ice stalk (sic) at Random Lake.
With regard,
R.M.T."
There is evidence that she was living at this time possibly in Milwaukee, WI. A postcard from her mother, Anna TOECKES, postmarked Random Lake, May 26, 1910 is addressed to Miss Rose TOECKES, 10821 ½ - 27 Str, Milwaukee, Wis. Anna writes, "You all may come...You got to take things out here the way they are." Rose was married Sept. 14, 1910 to Matt Decker in Milwaukee, WI. On August 31, 1912, Rose gave birth to Ray in Wauwatosa, WI and then to Aloysious, born July 1, 1913. Unfortunately, Aloysious lived only 5 short days, dying July 5, 1913.
Rose and Matt moved to Power, Montana where they continued to farm until 1948 .During the Depression, Rose raised about 100 turkeys a year to provide extra income. In 1948 Rose and Matt sold their farm to Math TOECKES and Irwin Kultgen and moved to Dutton. In 1950, Matt wrote to Rose from Hot Springs, MT where he often went to bath in the warm waters. He comments, " Get Ray to cut the Hay and I will put it up when I get home." While in retirement, Matt kept busy as a Rawleigh salesman.Always a baseball player, Matt continued to play until the age of 51. Rose, too, kept busy by babysitting local children, gardening and looking after such church activities as the laundering of the linens."---[This section from Karen Mahoney, 3-21-2002]
Sheboygan County Courthouse had Mathias Decker as 25 yrs of age on his wedding date and his occupation as a steamfitter. It had Rose M. TOECKES with occupation as Domestic. Witness to their Wedding was Henry Binsfeldt with Rev. V. Mueller, Random Lake, WI proceeding.
