Biography

NOTE: There is no evidence to support the idea that this person is a son (or grandson) of Conrad Dieffenbach (1710-1777) and Maria Sybilla Kobel (1711-1807) of Berks County, Pennsylvania. He is not named in Conrad's will. The person represented by this profile lived Fayette County, PA--not Berks.

From the Deffenbaughs.org website:

Born in Germany in 1749. Conrad Deffenbaugh, a native of Germany, along with his brother Wilhelm (William), came to America sometime in the 1760s. Since there is no record of their landing at the port of Philadelphia, certain circumstances prevailing at that time lead me to believe that they must have disembarked at Baltimore or one of the other Maryland ports. Records show that other Deffenbaughs were living in Baltimore at the time who might have been kinfolk. There is a record of a Conrad Deffenbaugh taking communion at the Lutheran church in Frederick, MD in 1767. We know they were Lutherans but have no proof of their place of origin in Germany. (Baden has been mentioned).

1790 US census shows Conrod Dieffelbaugh as head of household consisting of 3 males and 4 females located in Springhill Township, Fayette, Pensylvania.[1]

I don't believe Conrad should be attached to the parents as shown here at 9 November 2021. Family researchers believe Conrad was born in Germany and later settled in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. The Berks County Deffenbaughs were a different family. See, for example, deffenbaughs.org .

I agree that there is not sufficient evidence to say he is related to the Berks County Dieffenbach lineage. It would be nice to get some primary sources to help figure out who he really is. I will try to add some from the Deffenbaugh website and/or FamilySearch, so the land patent info is not hiding behind a paywall. There is a another probably unrelated lineage from Lancaster County, as reflected in the following profile at FamilySearch, possibly related to Conrad Deffenbaugh?:

Since the origins of the Berks Dieffenbach family are disputed, I'd be interested to figure out details about the origins of these other lineages.
