Dorothea (Dellinger) Foltz was a Pennsylvanian.

Dorothea “Dorothy” Dellinger, daughter of Christian Dellinger Sr. and Mary Magdalena (Handwerk or Andrick) Dellinger, was born in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania on 5 January 1761. Alternate birth and birthplace: 16 October 1760 in Shenandoah County, Virginia. She was married twice.

"Daughter Dorathy" is named in her father Christian Dillinger's 1780 will.[1]

First Marriage: She married first to Johann “John” Christoph Kauffman (also spelled Coffman). They married in 1778 in Shenandoah, Virginia and had two sons:

Her husband John served in the Revolutionary War. He returned home on furlough and died Nov 1781. Dorothy was appointed the Administrator of her husbands estate. [3]

Second Marriage: Dorothy then married Joshua Voltz (or Foltz) in 1783 and they had eight children together before she passed away in 1816 in Shenandoah County, Virginia.[4] Joshua passed away in 1833.

Oath made by Joshua Foltz re: stepsons Adolph and John Kauffman: Joshua Foltz made oath on 11 February 1794 that Adolph Coffman and John Coffman are the children and heirs of John Coffman, dec.[5]

Excerpted from Foltz Family Bible: “Joshua Foltz b. 25 Jan 1760 Culpeper, VA., d. 17 July 1833 Woodstock, Va., son of Peter and Elizabeth (Muntein or Mantein) Foltz, married to Dorothea Dellinger Kauffmann. Dorothea was first married to Johanna Kauffman who died Nov. 1781 and by whom she had two sons: Johan Kaufmann and Adolph Kauffmann. Dorothea Dellinger Kauffmann Foltz b. Oct 1760, d.11 Mar 1816”[6]

Will of her father Christian Dellinger, naming his daughter Dorothy: Christian Dellinger nominates his wife Magdalene as Executrix. He devises and bequeaths to "my eldest son George; my daughters Sybella, Rosina, Dorothy, and Magdalena; my sons Emanuel, Christian, and George." The will entered probate August 1780.[7]

Research Notes

Dorothea “Dorothy” (reportedly her middle name is Christina) Dellinger, of this profile, is often confused with Christina (Dellinger) Kauffman, wife of Johannes George “George” Kauffman. Their biographical data is similar and it is easily understood how their records could be conflated. It is highly likely these two women are cousins.

  • A third merge provided alternate birth and death dates, again with no sources. So noted. Needs further research.
