Biography

Peter Costner's wife is identified as "Molly" in a deed [1] and as "Mary" in his estate papers.[2] Her tombstone inscription is:
"Sacred to the Memory of Mary M. Costner departed this life June [illegible] 1839 Aged 90 years" [born c1749][3]

Parentage Unestablished

The source of the “Dellinger” surname for Mary ("Molly”) is Hoffman's Our Kin, which states: “Peter Costner married Mary Magdalene Dellinger, sister to Henry Dellinger and to Margaret Dellinger, wife of Michael Hoyle.”[4] When Mr. Hoffman gathered oral history for his 1915 publication, he and his informants were aware only of North Carolina records for a Martin Dellinger and for a Philipp Dellinger the father of Henry. Speculations of Mary’s kinships are definitely incorrect as to her father Philipp Dellinger and her alleged brother Henry Dellinger and likely are incorrect as to her alleged sister Margaret Unknown.

The Dellinger pioneers in North Carolina were three brothers, who were born at Oberacker village in Dertingen District, Duchy of Württemberg, Germany (this area now lies in the State of Baden-Württemberg, Germany):

Scrutiny of birth, marriage, and death records of Oberacker village do not reveal that any of the three Dellinger brothers had a surviving daughter named Mary Magdalena.[5]

The point is this: there is no direct evidence for Mary Magdalena’s birth year, birthplace, and parentage. Wherever, whenever, and to whomever she was born, it was not in Oberacker, Germany.

I am leaving Mary Magdalena Costner's maiden name as "Dellinger" in case she descends from another man named Dellinger. However readers should remain alert that no evidence whatever has been discovered establishing any maiden name at all for her.
Mary Magdelene Dellinger-32 has been removed as daughter of Johann Philipp Dellinger and Catharina Zeeb. Please see discussion in G2G Forum for more details. Thank you.
In response to speculation that Catharina (Zeeb) Dellinger was the mother of Mary Magdalene, there is no record of her circa 1746 birth in the Oberacker Church Register, Another reason Catharina (Zeeb) Dellinger is unlikely to be her mother is that Catharina and Philipp Dellinger did not marry until 1748. If Mary Magdalene was Catharina Zeeb's daughter, she would have been illegitimate and would not carry the Dellinger surname. There is no evidence to support the speculation that Philipp and Catharina (Zeeb) Dellinger were the parents of Mary Magdalene Dellinger.

Kathy, this illegitimacy comment looks like straining. More likely in those days was a birth not recorded anywhere even if others are recorded? Mary's taking Henry Dellinger as co-administrator suggests a family intimacy, and they worked together for years.

Dellinger-131 and Dellinger-32 appear to represent the same person because: They have the same name, same parents.
