Biography

Eli Dellinger was the eldest son of Martin Dellinger and his wife Ann Mary Englefinger (a.k.a. Inglefinger).

Eli, about age 22, was not in his father's Lincoln County, North Carolina, 1830 census household and is not enumerated elsewhere in the county as head of a household.

The 1832 tax list for Capt. Stamey's district includes "Eli Delinger with 59 1/2 acres valued at $60 and one white poll [Eli is the poll].[1]

Based on the birth years of Eli's known children, he married Margaret Hoyle about 1833 or before. Margaret's maiden name "Hoyles" [sic Hoyle] is stated on the death certificate of her last-known child, Eva Catherine.[2]

26 February 1836, Martin Dellinger conveyed land he had acquired from his father Henry Dellinger to Eli.

The 1840 Lincoln County, N.C., tax list for Captain Estley Rhyne's district has an entry for "Eli Delinger" listing 443 acres valued at $500 and one white poll;[3] however, the entry is stricken through, indicating that boundaries of Rhyne's district had changed, and Eli was residing in a different tax district. Not all tax lists are extant, and Eli has not been found in any other 1840 tax district. The previous year’s lists were used as a guide when compiling the current year’s tax list, implying that Eli's stricken-out entry represents his 1839 taxables. The 1839 list is not extant.

Margaret (Hoyle) Dellinger was alive in September 1844 when her child Eva Catherine was born in Lincoln County, North Carolina.[4] Margaret was deceased before Eli's second marriage in 1849.

About 1848, Eli relocated to Blairsville in Union County, Georgia. The sale of his North Carolina land has not been found in deed indexes of Lincoln or Cleveland or Gaston counties.

In January 1851, Eli's father, Martin (acting as agent and attorney for the heirs of his deceased daughter Rebecca and for Elizabeth widow of Martin's deceased son Levi and for his son Eli), sold their inherited share of their maternal grandmother's North Carolina property. This conveyance proves the marriage of Martin Dellinger to Ann Mary Englefinger and also proves the descent of Rebecca, Levi, and Eli from their deceased mother Ann Mary (Englefinger) Dellinger.

4 January 1851, Lincoln County, North Carolina, DB 42:112-113, Martin Dellinger as Agent and Attorney for Eli Dellinger, heirs of Rebecca (Dellinger) Williams, and Elizabeth Dellinger [son Levi's widow] sold 333 acres on Hoyles Creek to Lewis Dellinger. The deed specifies Martin was selling "the undivided three shares of a one seventh part . . . of the legatees of Ann Mary Dellinger dec'd. [Martin's wife] she being entitled to a one-seventh part of the heirs of Eve Englefinger.
Eve Englefinger had seven children, one of whom was Ann Mary (Englefinger) Dellinger. Because Ann Mary was deceased, her four surviving children (Eli, Rebecca, Sarah, and Levi) inherited Ann Mary's one-seventh share. By 1851, Rebecca and Levi were deceased, so their shares were inherited by their heirs. Sarah had already sold her share in 1849; Lincoln County deed book 46:136.

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Eli by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA test-takers in his direct paternal line. Mitochondrial DNA test-takers in the direct maternal line: It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Eli:

Dellinger-547 and Dellinger-203 appear to represent the same person because: the sister of Eli Dellinger, Sarah (Dellinger) Williams, is the daughter of Martin Dellinger. Eli Dellinger is the son of Martin Dellinger. Please see profile Dellinger-203 for a complete picture of the life of Eli Dellinger, with sources. We know the death of Eli Dellinger was June 5, 1900 and we know where he was buried. His father Martin Dellinger lived in Lincoln county and I've sent a message to our cousin Kathy Gunter Sullivan, a certified genealogist living in the area and specializing in the Dellinger genealogy, to ask her if she can confirm Lincoln county as his birth place.
