Biography

1776 Project
Mathias Delong served with Northampton County Militia, Pennsylvania Militia during the American Revolution.

Matthias (also found as Matthew) was the son of Abraham & Catren/Catharine DeLong.

Matthias/Matthew married Maria Margaretta ___ aft 1760 in likely Northampton Co., PA. One source has her surname as Ehelichen.

Following from research of the late John D. Baldwin III:

MATTHIAS / MATTHEW (5-2-2) b. say 1735-37. He is named second in 1764 settlement and was presumably the second son. J. DeLong's "Plow a Straight Furrow" says born 1740, but I doubt if there is any document and I think a few years too late.

176_ - He married Maria Margaretta _______, called Margareta. Could she have been a Falck? Falcks were baptismal sponsors for two of their children. George Falck was co-executor with widow Margareth of Matthias's estate.

1768 - Child baptized in what is now Lehigh Co.

1772 - Tax £0.18.8 in Lynn Twp., Northampton Co. (Lehigh Co. formed in 1812 from Northampton Co.)

1772 - Child baptized in nearby Berks Co.

1774 - Child baptized in nearby Berks Co.

1780 - 26 Oct 1780 served in 6th Company, Northampton Co. Militia under Capt. Probst (PA Archives v:8:433)

1st Battalion Lynn Township 6th Company Capt. Matthias Probst

1782 - Still under Capt. Probst (Archives V:8:513). Then on 27 Jul 1782 he was under Lt. George Grunewalt, Lancaster Co. (V:7:607) and 21 Sep 1782 (also V:7:607), the latter specifically as in the 2d Part of the 4th Class, 6th Battalion.

17__ - Book "Plow a Straight Furow" says he was a member of Jacob's Church in Jacksonville (Dutch Reformed) which he had a part in building.

1785 - Taxed £0.7.0 Weisenberg Twp., Lehigh Co., PA.

1785 - His death (PSF erroneously says 1788, thus I also questioned the birthyear it assigned to him, above.) Administration of his estate #1119, Northampton Co. On 21 Nov 1785, Margareth Delong widow of Mathias Delong late of Lynn Twp., carpenter deceased, George Falck of Weisenburg Twp. yeoman, Martin Probst & George Breish of Lynn Twp. gave bond for $300. Administrators of Mathias' estate, Margareth Delong and George Falck were to prepare an inventory.

The three-page inventory, dated 3 Dec 1785, totaled £109.2.3, then was amended by sixpence "deduct for mistake", for a final £109.1.9. Subsequently further sums were added -- £21.1.6 the amount which said goods advanced by sale at public vendue; £2810.1 a bond due by Edward Delong; and £6.12.5 cash received of Jacob Arndt fees for collecting a county tax. The final total was £165.5.9.

Among the larger inventory entries were £21.3.0 for a bond of Peter Sasseman payable 27 Nov 1785; four cows and two calves £12.15.0; seven acres of grain £8.0.0; a pipe stove £3.10.0.

Among the disbursements were £9.11.4 to John Delong (I assume his brother); £1.5.6 to Simon Wertman (note 1787 suit above by Catherine Wertman); another £20.0.0 to John Delong; £0.5.0 to John Wertman; £2.18.5 "due Jos. Delong (no doubt the son Johann Joseph) pay & expenses for going to Shamokin three times on business of the estate"; £0.5.0 paid for carriage in going to the Register's office to settle this account. The bond due from "Edward Delong, suppos'd insolvent" was deducted.

I find no mention of farm property in the inventory, but there was a modest £0.4.3 paid "the surveyor general & other expenses respecting the land and in going to Philada." After disbursements, the balance in the hands of the accountants was £20.6.0.

1787 - On 7 Feb 1787, Catherine Wertman (presumeably the same person) appointed as her attorney, "my beloved son" John Delong, also of Sunbury to represent her in recovering from the estate of Mathias Delong of Lynn Twp assorted household items purchased at vendue. Also mentioned are assorted household items and cash in the possession of Michael Angle, also of Lynn Twp (Power of Attorney recorded 15 Apr 1787, Northumberland Co, PA Deed Book C, Page 440). (provided by Tom Young <removed disallowed email> on 2/7/2004.../rwd)

1787 - Catherine Wertman (see text for brother John (5-2-4) of Northumberland Co., PA brought suit against estate of Matthew Delong, late of Lynn Twp. (appears to be abbreviated version of above.../rwd)

1809 - Administration of estate of Margaret DeLong of Lynn Twp., I assume Matthias's widow, #2617 (Lehigh Co.? I was told however, this is a Northampton administration.) The Herring Genealogy says on p. 23, "DeLONG: A petition of Nov. 27, 1809 in Northampton County" (O.C. Bk. 3, p. 653) reads: "Mathias DeLong of Lynn Township died 24 year ago leaving a widow and 10 children, -- that the widow died recently -- that one of the children, Elisabeth, inter-married with George Herring, died leaving four children living at this time."

1809 - Northampton County Orphans Court, 27 November 1809: Estate of Matthias Delong, Lynn Township (died about 24 years ago) - inquest for partition requested: land: 117 acres, messuage, plantation, tract, in Lynn Township, bounded by Andrew Sechler, John Leiby, Ferdinand Follweiler, others. (provided by Tom Young <removed disallowed email>)

1812 - A Northampton Co. deed of 7 Mar 1812, recorded 27 Aug, shows that Mathias had died intestate leaving widow and six children -- Joseph, Jacob, John George, Catherine, Elizabeth and Christina. I do not know the occasion for this deed after the fact; L. Varisco was unable to get a readable photocopy. (H 3 ppp. 148-9) The Herring Genealogy says on p. 23, "DeLONG: A petition of Aug. 8, 1812 in Berks County (O.C. Bk. 5, p. 144) reads: "George Herring, -- inter-married with Elisabeth, a daughter of Mathias DeLong, deceased, that the said Elisabeth left issue four children, George, Catharine, Benjamin and Daniel, minors under 14, entitled to a portion of their said grandfather's estate."

1814 - Quit-claim deed granted 23 Apr 1814 to George Herring (his son-in-law) mentions George DeLong of Miami Co., OH (Letters of Admin. I;33).

Their known children:

1. Johann Joseph "Joseph" DeLong b. 1766. 2. Johann Jacob "Jacob" DeLong b. 1768. 3. Michael DeLong b. 1772. 4. Johann George "George" DeLong b. 1774. 5. Catherine DeLong Fischer 6. Elizabeth DeLong Herring b. abt. 1809. 7. Christina DeLong Wagner

There were likely 2 or 3 other children.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Mathias by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Mathias:
