Birth
"Aaron B. Delong was born in 1757" [1] son of Conradt DeLong and his wife Catherine Froelich DeLong. He is believed to have been born in Albany, Dutchess county, New York

Residence, 1776 American Revolution, UEL's & Eventual Relocation
He is recorded as having been settled at "Jamaica, Long Island, New York" before the war. [1]

On 25 October 1780 Simon, Aaron and John DeLong, all sons of Conradt DeLong, served as Privates in the 'Loyal American Regiment' (LAR) were called to Muster at New York serving under Major Ferguson & Lt. Duncan Fletcher in Major Thomas Barclay's Company, Provincial Light Infantry the Southern Expedition.[2] [3]

On 18 June 1781 at Flushing, Long Island, New York brothers John and Aaron DeLong were called to Muster in Major Thomas Barclay and his Company of the 'Loyal American Regiment' (LAR) serving under Lt. John Robinson and Sergeant Elias Degrushe. [2]

The LAR's were originally raised by Col. Beverley Robinson in the Spring of 1777 primarily from Westchester and lower Dutchess county, New York. As they continued in their campaigns ranging from New York state, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia and Connecticut. Their last major action took place in September 1781 with Benedict Arnold's campaign in New London, Connecticut After words the regiment returned to Long Island where they [generally] remained in garrison until embarking for Nova Scotia in September 1783."[4]

After the Americans won their independence from England the New England, as with the former LAR Regiment, the American United Empire Loyalists (UEL's) were relocated in stages after much planning to New Brunswick and Nova Scotia (proper). [5]

After his marriage, he moved to Kennebecasis River (near Gondola Point, New Brunswick) and by 1801 (probably earlier than 1799) had moved to Millstream (North of Sussex, NB). He was given a land grant at 38 Millstream, Studholm Parish, Kings Co., New Brunswick of 400 acres [source 1809 12/11 Vol. E; No. 517 "Natural Resources Department; Land Grants This source needs more complete info.]

"Aaron B. DeLong" resettled at Millstream, Kingston Parish, Kings county, New Brunswick. [1]

In 1816 Aaron Sr. sold his land and this appears to be about the time his children started moving in different directions in the family's break up.[6]

Marriage and Children
On 10 November 1788 at Jamaica, Queens, New York he married Mary Kierstead. [1] Mary was born 22 May 1770 [1] daughter of Samuel Keirstede & Mary Johnson Kierstede who were also loyalists. [1]

Research Notes
CAUTION: Find-A-Grave memorial discrepancy with daughter Mary Ann DeLong who m. George Fox. In the earlier WikiTree profile the memorial Find A Grave: Memorial #47628284, cited for this daughters birth, links to a old mostly illegible gravestone image reading "_______ Harward who d. May 1856 age _______". The otherwise unsourced db memorial was created using a birth of 1784, Pennsylvania. Additionally, this memorial is linked to parents Aaron DeLong and Mary Kierstead DeLong. The problem with this record is several fold: Mary Kierstead was 14 years old in 1856 and The DeLong's didn't marry until 1788 probably at New Brunswick otherwise it would have most likely been in the state of New York. See other contemporary profiles in this research notes section for an explanation about like-named contemporary Aaron DeLong's.

CAUTION: Other contemporary Aaron DeLong's should not be confused with this profile:

  • Aaron DeLong Sr. & Jr., of Washington county, Pennsylvania See WikiTree profiles Aaron DeLong, Jr. (abt 1752) and Aaron DeLong, Sr. (abt 1725-)
  • Aaron Delong (1768-1824) in Caldonia county, Vermont, residency yr. 1818
  • Aaron DeLong, land grant transaction in Yr. 1788 at Buffalo Creek, West Virginia, 120 acres. [Sims Index to Land Grants in West Virginia: Book 2:177]
  • Aaron DeLong, Jr. along with father Aaron, Sr. are both in the 1790-1820 Ohio land tract called the Government Donations" [100 acres per man (sometimes more) to men over 18 yrs and willing to carry a rifle to defend designated areas against hostile natives].

DeLong's of Ohio: According to source Samuel B. Hackney, ed. "DeLong-Hooper Gleaner" Vol.1; No.1 (1970) p.2., a Christopher DeLong came from Germany and first settled in Frederick county, VA. where son Jonathan was b. 1794. Jonathan DeLong m. Sabina Horne and they moved to Belmont county, Ohio. by 1819. This Ohio family of Delong's may be associated with the Aaron Delong of Buffalo Creek, West Virginia as noted in the 1788 land grant.

Doug thanks for initiating the merge. Just an FYI: The Find-A-Grave memorial for Aaron DeLong isn't a reliable source because the memorial doesn't include a legible photo of his gravestone. Without a reliable primary or secondary source that information cannot be relied upon. In any case, I'll complete the merge and the system will include you in the profile trusted list which is fine by me :-) It's nice to meet you. My grandmother used to talk to me about the DeLongs as they were her grandparents.
