Delph is most likely the 'Americanized' version of the German spelling Delp. Use both spellings on searches.
See Moncrief, Laura Lee. DELPH. Divide, Self-published, 2007, 2012. I will be referring to this book with notes on the pages (Example: DELPH, Pg x)
Birth
The family was in Mecklenburg County, NC in 1776-1777, then in Rowan County, NC 1778-1790. By 1793, the family was in it's location which would become Grayson County, VA. DELPH, Pg 2-3
Catherine's birth is given as "ca. 1776-1779 probably North Carolina." DELPH, Pg 21
1820 Census: Catherine is 26-45 (1775-1796)
1830 Census: Catherine is in the 50-60 (1770-1780)
1840 Census: Catherine is in the 60-70 (1770-1780)
1850 Census: Catherine is 75=birth year 1775
1858 Death: Catherine is 75=birth year 1783 (FaGR repeats ca. 1776-1779)
Conclusion: discarding the age at death as an outlier, the 1776-1779 range appears to be appropriate (therefore the unspecific NC location would appear to be correct as well).
Some doubt on her parents has been caused by the information given on her death record. However, the 1796 marriage record takes precedence; it clearly states that the marriage took place in the home of Peter Delph. Marriage in the bride's home was a very common practice at this time.
