Elizabeth Dempsey was born about 1826 in Mountrath, Ireland,^[1][2] the fifth child of James Dempsey and Catharine (Keys) Dempsey.

In 1848, during the potato famine, her father brought his entire family to the US, landing in New York in October 30.^[2] On their way to Chicago, they were forced to land in Sandusky, Ohio, where they stayed.

The following summer, a cholera epidemic hit Sandusky; five of the family died, including Elizabeth, her father and three siblings.^[3][4]
