Biography

Veronica ( or Verona) Demuth, a daughter of Tobias and Rosina Demuth, was married first in 1738 to Valentine Loehans. She accompanied her husband on the missionary work to St. Thomas in 1739. After the premature death of her husband in 1743, she married the missionaryu John Bohmer during a happy marriage that lasted twenty-two years. With him she made two trips to Bethlehem, PA in the years 1747 and 1754. After having served at the mission on St. Thomas with him until 1765, she followed him to St. John, where she was to suprevise the missiom for several years. Her age, her long years of experience, and her motherly love and concern for black women, earned her their complete trust and low. During her dedicated and arduous service on St. John, she was stricken within eight mionths with a fever which brought her useful life to an end on October 5, 1765. When the news of her death was made known to the assembeled Black congregation on St. Thomas, there broke out a general weeping caused by the grateful love a nd respect for a deserving benefactress.
