Pleasant Dennis's birthdate is either February 15, 1830 as Tempie Puckett had copied down in an old Family Bible or November, 1826 which is stated on the 1900 Estill Co., Ky. census records. (Barbara Flexter and John Dennis have February 15, 1828).

In a Declaration For Original Invalid Pension dated February 9, 1887, Pleasant Dennis states he is 58 years old making his birth year 1829. He further states that while near Stone River, Tennessee on the 22 day of July, 1863, he contracted a severe cold 'causing rheumatism from my knee to my head (right side of my body)' and claimed pension due to the rheumatism. In a Declaration of Invalid Pension of July 11, 1890, Pleasant Dennis states he is 62 years of age so that would make his birth year 1827/28. In Declaration for Original Invalid Pension, dated February 9, 1887, Pleasant Dennis states he is 58 years old making his birth year 1828/29. Anyway, Pleasant Dennis died November 12, 1902.

Pleasant Dennis served in Company C and H, 8th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, Union during the Civil War under Captain Winburn. He joined as a Private on August 19, 1861 at Estill Springs, Estill Co., Ky. He was mustered out November 17, 1864 at age 35 would make his birth year 1829 at Chattanooga, Tennessee. According to Captain T. J. Wright's written history of the Eighth Regiment Kentucky Volunteers, Private Dennis was one of three men who saved the flag during the Battle of Chickamauga, Tn. on August 19, 1863. Pleasant Dennis's description according to his pension application is as follows: 5'6" tall; Complexion, fair; Black Hair; Black Eyes. Private Dennis was transferred to Company "C" on July 6, 1864 due to illness. \
