Biography

Joseph was born on 31 Aug 1845, the son of James Denny and Jane McCarty.[1]

He enlisted as a private in Co. "G," the 45th Iowa Infantry at Keokuk, Iowa, on 25 May 1864, and he was mustered out on 16y Sept 1865, also at Keokuk.[2]

Joseph F. Denny married Harriet Hull on 10 Oct 1872 in Henry County, Iowa.[3] Joseph and Hattie had five children:[4]

  • James Harvey, b. 16 1872; m. Cora M. Tucker, 23 Feb 1898, Lowell, Henry, IA[5]
  • Linnie Belle, b. 14 March 1877; m. Elbert V. Lee, 12 Feb 1896, Henry Co., IA[6]
  • Elmer Elijah, b. 4 May 1879; m. Kathryn Rivey, 18 May 1904, Henry Co., IA[7]
  • Earl David, b. 29 May 1890 (28 May 1890, Henry Co., IA[8]
  • Fred E., b. 24 Feb 1894; d. 20 Feb 1939, Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA.[9]; served as a private, Co. "M," 27th US Infantry, (Serial #2288375)

Joseph F. Denny, a widower, and son Freddie E. were living on South Sultana Avenue in Ontario, San Bernardino, California, in 1910. Earl Denny and his wife were living next door.[10]

In 1920, Joseph F. Denny was living with his son Fred E. in Huntington Park, Los Angeles, California. Joseph was a vegetable gardener and Fred was a soldier, just discharged.[11]

He was admitted to the US National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers at Sawtelle, California, on 23 Oct 1926. He was a widower and had a son, Earl, who lived in Belvedere Gardens, CA.[2]

Joseph died on 11 June 1927 at Los Angeles.[12][13] He is buried at the Burge Cemetery, New London, Henry, Iowa.[1] You can see a picture of his gravestone at FindAGrave.
