I can remember my Great Grandfather, as a tall, very old man (i.e. to an 8 year old), with a big white beard. I saw him last, I think, when I went down to the house in Siemen Street, Blackhill, where Dick Wilson took my photo, wearing my
cassock, surplice and stiff white collar with bow tie. I can well remember them trying to find a prayer book for me to hold in one hand, and failing this, they came up with a diary, which to make it look thicker, I had to hold open with a
finger between the pages.
I think that our line of Dents may have had their 18th Century roots in Nenthead and or Alston, Cumberland. There is certainly no lack of them in Yorkshire, Durham, and Cumberland. Reasons:
1. A Dent cousin always believed that they came from Nenthead. She must have learned this from someone.
2. The Arkengarthdale Dent's deinitely had some connection. On 18th May 1812 two Dents were baptised at Langthwaite - Henry son of Charles and Mary of Langthwaite, and Mary the 18 YEAR OLD daughter of Thomas and Mary of ALSTON.
