Biography

John Denton was born about 1716, likely in Jamaica, Long Island, New York. He was the son of Richard Denton and Temperance (Steevens) Denton.[1] He married Elizabeth Kelsey of Huntington in the Huntington Presbyterian Church on January 23 1738/9[2] and the couple were baptized there as adults on 29 July 1739.[3] He signed the Continental Association boycotting Britain in 1775, and his last mention in the records is in a December 1777 food supply survey.[4] His date of death is not known. They had ten children, all baptized in Huntington, the last in 1754.[5]

Stephen and his brother Joseph were in the English Army during the American Revolution, and hence were obliged to leave the United States in 1783. Stephen went to England and returned to Upper Canada in 1789 and then back to New York state.
  7. Phebe Denton - Baptised Apr 2, 1749
  8. Elizabeth Denton - Baptised Jul 14, 1751
  9. Joseph Denton, born Jul 08, 1752 in Huntington, Long Island, New York; died 1835 in Little River, Nova Scotia; married (1) Mary Lucy Martha Waters Jun 9, 1776 in Cold Spring, Queens, New York; married (2) Mary Odell Jan 24, 1805 in Trinity Anglican Church, Digby, Digby County, Nova Scotia.
  10. Ruth Denton - Baptized Mar 31, 1754; married Michael Burns Jul 17, 1781; died 1817 in Waterford, Digby Neck, Nova Scotia. Ruth Denton married Michael Burns 17 Jan 1781 of Connecticut, formerly of Suffolk Co. New York. They moved after the American Revolution to Digby Neck, Nova Scotia. They were founders of Waterford, Digby Neck. Michael died there in 1817.
