Biography

John was a member of Company G, 30th Kentucky Mounted Infantry in the Civil War. He was mustered in on March 29, 1864 by Capt. Charles H. Fletcher at Camp Burnside, Kentucky. Initially created to protect the Kentucky State Capital and to be in the service of the state, their mission changed as the War Department ordered that they be mustered into the US Service. The 30th became "one of the most efficient one-year regiments in the service."

He was likely the John Denton who, with James Denton, testified when a mounted soldier rode over Clayton M. Huff, while the latter was sleeping.

In the 1880 census of Wayne County, Kentucky, his household appears to have been listed twice, once with his correct age and with 7 children, and another time as 7 years younger and with only 4 children. It also remains possible that there were two John Dentons.

John W. Denton died at about age 78 on 20 Jan 1924 in Monticello, Wayne County, Kentucky. His parents were specified as Benjamin Denton, whose birthplace was given as Green County, Kentucky, and Betsy Huff, whose birthplace was given as Wayne County, Kentucky.[1]
