Biography

Baldwin VI was 7th Lord des Marets, knight, Lord of Hurtebise, of half-Fichan, and of Eth, in Renault. He married Agnes de Forest, daughter of Herbert de Forest. He died in the year 1331, and his widow Agnes died in 1335, as indicated by Charters from the years 1331 and 1335 (found in the Abbey of Saint Aubert, at Cambray, at Wallincourt, and at Verger Abbey) that also name William, his father, indicated that Baldwin VI died in 1331 and his widow Agnes died in 1335.[1]

This couple had five sons and two daughters. The eldest daughter became a nun. The youngest daughter married with Jean de Lamelin, Lord of Fasnicres, in Renault.[1]

The sons were:[1]

  1. Baldwin.
  2. Jacques, Lord of Camerin, in Artois,
  3. Jean, Lord of Autrep,
  4. William, Lord of Bossu, in Picardy, and of Fleurbay,
  5. Pierre, who settled in Flanders, and whose direct line died out in the second generation.

The son Jacques des Marets, Lord of Camerin, changed his ancestral Arms, adding to it a chief azure charged with three roses. His brother, Jean des Marets, Lord of Autrep, also changed his Arms in manners following: quartered: in 1 and 4, in azure a cross argent; in 2 and 3, in azure four roses.[1]

Uncertain Existence

This profile is based on text published in the second edition of The Demarest Family [1] which was copied from the first edition.[2] The medieval section of the first edition was by Louis P. De Boer, and was a translation which did not acknowledge its Dutch source in H. J. Koenen's Het Geslacht De Marez.[3] Koenen stated that the medieval genealogy was presented as "geheel voor rekening van Le Carpentier en pater Le Vaillant, daar we niet in de gelegenheid zijn hun betrouwbaarheid te controleeren" (entirely as communicated by [Jean-Baptiste] Le Carpentier and Father Le Vaillant, because we are not in a position to check their reliability). However, Jean-Baptiste Carpentier is now known to have produced fraudulent genealogies with forged 'proofs' and nothing he wrote can be taken as evidence unless corroborated by independent, original sources (see Carpentier Frauds). Unless these are found, this profile should be regarded as of Uncertain Existence. Millard-1402 21:17, 20 November 2022 (UTC)
