Mary Devault first appears in the historical records when she married John Six in Washington County, VA. Mary's father, Jacob Devault SR and brothers, Abraham Devault, Jacob Devault Jr and David Devault also appear in the early Washington County, VA Land records when they filed their respective land entries there. These land claims now fall in Scott Co, VA where Jacob Devault Jr appeared during the 1820 and 1830 census. Mary Devault's sister, Barbara Devault also appears in Washington Co, VA when she married John Layne in 1789.
John and Mary Six appear to have followed Mary's brothers, Abraham and David Devault, into Grainger County, Tennessee as John Six name appears on the 1800 marriage record as bondsman for her brother, David Devault when he married Susan Guest. That part of Grainger Co, TN where Abraham and David Devault lived became Claiborne County when it was formed in 1801.
Autosomal DNA testing indicates a close family relationship between the descendants of Mary (Devault) Six, Barbara (Devault) Layne, Jacob Devault Jr, David Devault and Abraham Devault, who had married Catherine Gross.
Of the children from Jacob Devault Senior, only Barbara (Devault) Layne lived long enough to have her age and birthplace recorded in a census. Census records show that she was born in North Carolina. This agrees with Jacob Devault Senior's land transfers which took place in Lincoln Co, N.C. in the 1770s.
These migrations and family relationships are also supported by the close family ties between the Wills and Devault families, extending from the 1750s in Berks Co, PA, to the 1760 & 1770s in North Carolina, to Washington and Scott County, VA up into the 1830s. For more information on these close family friendships, see the Bio for her father and brother's Abraham and Jacob Devault Jr.
