Biography

Sir Walter Devereux was the son of Sir Walter Devereux, Sheriff of Herefordshire, Constable of Builth Castle (b. c 1359, d. 20 Jun 1401) and and Agnes Crophull (b. c 1372, d. 3 Feb 1436).[1] He was was born about 1387[2] at Weobley & Bodenham, Herefordshire, England.[3] He died in 1420[2] at Newbold Verdon, Leicestershire, England.[3]

Walter married Elizabeth Bromwich (b. c 1391), daughter of Sir Thomas Bromwich and Alice Oldcastle, circa 1410 at Weobley & Bodenham, Herefordshire, England.[4] (see research notes below)

They had issue:

  • Sir Walter Devereux, Sheriff of Herefordshire & Gloucestershire, Constable of Wigmore, Keeper of Leominster[3] (b. c 1411, d. 22 Apr 1459)
  • Cicily Devereux, b. c 1415, d. c 1434, m. Sir John Baskerville[5]

Research Notes

  • From ThePeerage.com: "He married Maud Bromwich, daughter of Sir Thomas Bromwich.[2]
  • Also from ThePeerage.com: Elizabeth Devereux is the daughter of Sir Walter Devereux and Maud Bromwich. Her married name became Milbourne. Cicily was not listed as his daughter.

There is some discrepancy noted between the only source in all the merging for this ancestor and what was merged into his dates and places in the profile above. I am going to look for this source to verify the information and would like to ask that others help me to document him please. Thank you!

Hi!

I'll be adopting this profile for the Magna Carta Project. Douglas Richardson's Magna Carta Ancestry shows him on a trail to the Bigods (see Herbert-268#Magna Carta Trails).

Cheers, Liz

It was actually his father, who died on 25 June, but in 1402, of wounds received at the Battle of Pilleth, not this Walter Devereaux, See here http://www.historyofparliamentonline.org/volume/1386-1421/member/devereux-sir-walter-1402
