Augustus Dickens is my great great grandfather. His daughter Amy Dickens Howland is my great grandmother. Augustus left his near blind wife Harriet in England and went to Illinois with his girlfriend Bertha Phillips. They had 2 sons and my g. g. grandmother. Boys stayed in Illinois and Amy as a young girl came to Massachusetts where she later married Charles

Howland direct descendent of John Howland on the Mayflower. Very sadly Augustus died in his early thirties. On Christmas Eve Bertha sent the three children to a Christmas party and said she would be along later. She did take laudumum and ended her life as she couldn't go on without him. The two never married and Charles Dicken s supported Augustus 's wife in England and Bertha. They are buried in Illionois along with triplets that died at birth. Berth a was a very talented wonderful woman. All exactly true.

Augustus Dickens, a younger brother of author Charles Dickens, married Harriet Lovell at Trinity Church, Marylebone, 5th of December 1848. Harriet Dickens went blind two years later and Augustus separated from her. In 1858 Augustus left Britain for America, accompanied by Bertha Phillips, the daughter of an Irish barrister. It is unknown if they were ever married. Augustus Dickens died 1866 in Chicago, at the age of 38, of tuberculosis. Although accused otherwise, Charles Dickens supported both Harriet, who remained in England, and Bertha financially. Bertha went into decline and appears to have taken her own life, by an overdose of morphine or laudanum, in 1868 two years after Augustus Dicken's death.

June 1860 Augustus Dickens moved back to Chicago where he obtained a job with the Illinois Central Land Department. Frederick Barnard, a neighbor of Augustus Dickens of this time later wrote:

"I remember Augustus Dickens well," he said. "A more genial and whole-souled man never lived. His face bore a remarkable resemblance to portraits of his brother that I have seen. Augustus was small and spare and not at all striking in appearance. But his ready humor, his brilliant conversation, made him the life of whatever company he happened to be in, and he was probably the most popular man in the land office. His manners were most polished and he gave the impression of having had a splendid education... their house was the frequent gathering place of a coterie of people of refinement and culture and of musicians...of great ability. Mrs. Dickens' playing of classical music on the piano was grand...She was familiar with the music of all the great composers, and to hear her play at evening receptions and parties at her home was a great treat for her guests. She would often sing as she played, and I can remember clearly the rich, mellow sweetness of her voice. Mrs. Dickens was an exemplary wife, a woman of gentle breeding and fine education."

Dickens-653 and Dickens-337 appear to represent the same person because: According to her marriage certificate, Amy Bertha Dickens was the daughter of Augustus N Dickens and Bertha Phillips. (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FHPW-4ZK). She was born in Illinois and I traced Augustus, brother of Charles DIckens to Illinois as well (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MX4P-XNG)
