Biography

Amos was likely born between 1755 & 1765. His parents were Townsend Dickinson and Anne Underhill. 1790 and 1800 U.S. Census records show Amos living in Oyster Bay, New York, United States. Both Underhill Genealogy and Dickerson/Dickinson Genealogy books give Amos' spouse as Margaret _____. Amos died after 1816.

Research Notes

  • Amos was given a bequest in his maternal uncle, Isaac Underhill's will in 1816; therefore Amos was alive at that time.
  • It is postulated in ”Dickerson & Dickinson Descendants of Philemon Dickerson of Southold, Long Island, N.Y. Also Long Island Descendants of Captain John Dickinson of Oyster Bay” by Wesley L. Baker, Chicago, 1978. pp 224, 225: “It is more logical that the Amos who lived in Oyster Bay at & after the time of Townsend's death was his son. Furthermore said Amos had two great grandsons named Townsend Dickerson who may well have been named after Amos' father.”
  • There is a transcript (dated 18 Jan 1994) of a will (dated 3 May 1838) that's been posted on another genealogical website that is for an Amos Dickinson of Beekman, Dutchess County, New York, United States. Jane (Tingley) Hunter has a digital copy of the transcript. In this will, the wife is listed as Sarah, and children are listed as James, Sarah Ann Flagler (wife of George Flagler), and Samuel B. as well as Gr. Son Preston A Dickinson. More evidence is needed that this is the same Amos Dickinson that lived in Oyster Bay in 1880.
  • Need a source for the marriage date for Sarah Hallock and Amos Dickinson. Did the Amos Dickinson who lived in Oyster Bay in 1880 marry 2nd Sarah Hallock and move to Beekman, New York after 1880?

Dickinson-8080 and Dickinson-1235 are not ready to be merged because: Is this the Oyster Bay one?
posted by Maggie N.
Hello Maggie ~ Dickinson-8080 is the Oyster Bay Amos Dickinson. (I am the profile manager for him, and have added his descendants, including me.) However, Dickinson-1235 is attached to parents, Anne Underhill (Underhill-39) and Townsend (Dickinson-1228). Apparently Dickinson-1235, was added to the tree via someone's gedcom. I am trying to attach Dickinson-8080 to his parents and thought this merge would be the way, but maybe not? Dickinson-8080 is the Amos that is found in Underhill Genealogy pp 98 & 154, which includes his parents and children. Any advice for what to do to fix this? ~ Jane

Okay, Jane, I see the family group now. Thanks

Dickinson-8080 and Dickinson-1235 appear to represent the same person because: I believe this is the same Amos Dickinson. I have his descendants and you have his ancestors. I will also propose a merge with his wife, whom I do not have much information about.

Edit to add: I am descended through Amos' daughter, Joanna Dickinson (1786-1870) as per: Birth, Parentage, Marriage and Death; Underhill Genealogy, The Underhill Society of America, Vol. V, Gateway Press, Inc., Baltimore, 1980, pp 154 & 266. I have this volume and can scan and send the page if you want to see it.
