In 1874,[1] Alfred accompanied his older brother Henry to Santa Fe province, Argentina, where they became the estanciero of the Estancia which they named Las Lomas[2] in Santa Fe, Argentina.[3] In 1886, he married Getrude Loise Stirling, daughter of the Bishop of the Falkland Islands in a ceremony in Buenos Aires:
DICKINSON - STIRLING.- On the 30th Nov., at St. John's Anglican Church, Buenos Ayres, by the Right Reverend Waite H. Stirling, D.D., Bishop of the Falkland Islands, Alfred J Dickinson, Esq., of the Estancia Las Lomas, Santa Fe, to Gertrude Louise, second daughter of Bishop Stirling.[4]
In the summer of 1895, Alfred visited England, traveling on board the Danube,[5] the same ship which would bring his wife and children to England for a visit later in the year. But they all returned to Argentina after that. In Ocober 1899, Alfred witnessed the wedding of his niece Ethel in Rosario, Argentina.[6]
By the 1901 England Census they were back in England and Alfred was listed as a retired Argentine farmer, with a staff of five servants.[7]
Alfred died suddenly in 1909:
DEATH
The death occurred on Tuesday of Mr. Alfred John Dickinson, of Alphamstone House. The deceased only returned from Argentina a month ago, where he had interests in farming. He had been away for some years, and since his return he had gained the respect of all. On Friday in last week he attended the sale at Dynes Hall, and the same day was playing with his children. He was then well, but later in the day he was taken ill. Nurses and specialists arrived by a special train, but the operation which was at first thought to be successful, was of no avail. The deceased, who was 49 years of age on the day of his death, leaves a widow and a family of three sons and two daughters.[8]
His son Roger reports that he suffered from an appendix attack.[9]
