Gertrude was known as Betty.[1] She was born on her father's estate, Estancia Las Castanas in Las Rasas, Argentina. She was baptized at the Estancia on November 26, 1894.[2]
A year later she accompanied her mother and two older brothers on a trip to England on board the Danube, arriving at Southampton on November 25, 1895.[3] They would shortly return to Argentina, where her brother Roger would be born the following July. Following his birth, the family would return once again to live in England in the fall of 1896.[4]
She fell in love with Hugh Brooks, a Canadian soldier during the First World War that she met in England. And after the war she came to Canada and married him. Curiously, the records show her arriving at Quebec City on the Metagama on September 30, 1921, en route to Toronto and her fiance.[5] But the marriage record says that the wedding took place in June of the year![6]
She died in Victoria BC at the age of 94.[7]
