Biography

John Dietrich was born in Maidencreek, Berks County, PA.

When John Johannes Dietrich was born on November 7, 1760, in Maidencreek, Pennsylvania, his father, Leonard, was 28 and his mother, Catherine, was 26. He married Barbara Dachs Geiss in 1786 in Sacramento, Pennsylvania. They had one child during their marriage. He died in 1842 in Hubley, Pennsylvania, having lived a long life of 82 years.[1]

Johannes (John) and Barbara Dietrich, residing in Dauphin, PA , had recorded christenings for a number of their children in Klinger's Lutheran and Reformed Church, Erdman, Dauphin, PA (Klinger Church Records; Pennsylvania Births and Christenings, 1709-1950):

Eva Elisabeth Dieterich (F) b 21 Sep 1787 chr 14 Oct 1787
Johannes Dieterich (M) b 5 Dec 1789 chr 27 Dec 1789
George (M) b 2 Jan 1792 chr 12 Feb 1792
Philip Dieterich (M) b 5 Mar 1794 chr 13 Apr 1794
Leonhard Dieterich (M) b 1 Jun 1799 chr 6 Jul 1799

Note that an apparently unrelated couple, Johannes Dietrich (1771-1845) and Anna Barbara (Matter) Diederich (1766-aft 1806), were also living in Dauphin PA at about the same time as this John and Barbara. The children of the second couple were christened at a different church, in Mifflin Twp.

By 1830 John and his family had evidently dropped the "ich" from their name. John Deiter (male 60-70 y.o.) was recorded in the 1830 U.S. Census, J, residing in Lower Mohantongo, Schuylkill, Pennsylvania, with 1 M 10-15, 1 F 10-15 and 1 F 60-70. Sons John Deiter Jr (M 40-50), Andrew Deiter (M 30-40), Leonard Deiter (30-40), George Deiter (40-50) and Philip Deiter (M 30-40) were all recorded residing in the same township.

John Dieter (male 80-90 y.o.), was recorded in the 1840 U.S. Census, residing in Lower Mahantongo Township, Schuylkill, Pennsylvania, with 1 F 80-90. Sons Leonard Dieter (M 40-50) and Andrew Dieter (M 40-50) were recorded on the same page, and (probably) son John Dieter (M 40-50) was also living in the same township. A probably unrelated John M Dietrich (M 70-80) was residing in Barry Township, Schuylkill, Pennsylvania, along with a number of male relatives with family name Dietrich.

In his will dated 10 May 1834, Johannes Dietrich of Lower Mahantongo Township, Schuylkill County PA, names as his heirs "Söhne Johannes, Georg, Leonard und Philip" and further below mentions "Sohn Andreas" (the will is written in German script, and is difficult to decipher). Son Philip was named as executor; witnesses were Valentine Savidge and Jacob Artz. The will was probated 2 Jun 1842 in Schuylkill County. (Schuylkill Wills vol 1, p 287; image 149)

John died in May(?) 1842 in Hubley, Schuylkill, Pennsylvania.[2][3]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
