Biography

Birth

Harriet Dill was born on May 28, 1811, most likely in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, where her parents were living in 1810. She was the daughter of Joseph Dill and Mary Wright.[1][2][3][4] In about 1815, Harriet's father Joseph migrated west and settled in Rutherford County, Tennessee. Harriet is likely one of the young girls who appear in his household there in 1820.[5]

Marriage

In 1826, Harriet's father Joseph died. In his will, part of his bequest to Harriet was a "negro boy" named Spencer.[2] Not long after that, probably in about 1829, Harriet married Thomas Hutchison, most likely in Rutherford County, although no record of the marriage has been found. This newlywed couple, and and a single male slave who is likely Spencer, appear in the census in Rutherford County, in 1830.[6]

Later Life

Thomas and Harriet Hutchison raised a family of at least eleven children in Rutherford County between 1830-1856.[7][8][9]

By 1860, Harriet and Thomas had migrated to Gibson County, Tennessee, where they resided for the rest of their lives. [9][10][11]

Death

Harriet Hutchinson died on July 4, 1888, and was buried in Gibson County, Tennessee.[12]

Children

Children of Thomas and Harriet Hutchison include: [8][9]

  1. James Martin Hutchison, b. 1830
  2. Amanda D Hutchison, b. Abt 1832, m. Robert A. Overall, 1849
  3. Jesse Hutchison, b. Abt 1834
  4. Sarah Hutchison, b. Abt 1836
  5. Jacob Hutchison, b. Abt 1838
  6. John Hutchison, b. 1839
  7. Clementine Hutchison, b. 1842, m. William Jefferson Overall, 1860
  8. Rebecca Hutchison, b. Abt 1845, m. Benjamin Jasper Stroud, 1866
  9. Mary Hutchison, b. 1848, m. William L. Holt, 1874
  10. Lavenia Hutchison, b. 1850, m. John M. Ingram, 1875
  11. David Hutchison, b. Abt 1853
  12. Thomas R. Hutchison, b. 1855

All except Amanda appear in their household in the 1850 and/or 1860 census. Amanda married in 1849 and had already left the household by 1850, but many researchers identify her as an additional daughter. This appears to be correct. She married in Rutherford County in 1849, there is a daughter of the right age to be Amanda in their household in 1840, and her DOB fits neatly in the gap between James and Jesse. Though not triangulated, this conclusion is also supported by AncestryDNA ThruLines matches between descendants of Amanda (Ancestry users Beth Parnell and Larry King) and both Michael and Mark McClain, descendants of her grandparents Joseph Dill and Mary Wright through their oldest son, Harriet's brother Isaac Dill.

Slaves

Amanda Dill received the following slave as a bequest from her father Joseph in Joseph's will made on 21 April 1825 and proved in Rutherford County on 24 November 1826:[2]

Research Notes

Some researchers give 7 Feb 1828 as the marriage date, but no source for this date has been found. The estimated marriage date is based on Harriet's age and the DOB of their first known child.

The family's preferred spelling of her married name appears to be Hutchison, but it frequently appears in records as Hutchinson, Hucherson, and other variants.

Harriet is one of the four granddaughters of Rebecca (Thompson) Wright who was named as a beneficiary in Rebecca's will.[13]
