This is another noteworthy Tennessean who volunteered and fought for Texas independence. They volunteered to "git" Santa Anna. The state forever earned its "Volunteer" title. David Crockett's original group was 12-15. Many had to sell their boots to buy food, did not receive a paycheck, and were poorly clad.
John Henry Dillard was born 1805 in Smith County, Tennessee to parents, William (1750 -1820) and Sarah Brownlow Dillard of Tennessee. [1] Siblings were:
John Henry Dillard married Sarah Stokes/Jacobs in Wilson, Tennessee, USA.
Two children were born to the couple:
He left his family in Tennessee for safety, and traveled with friend, Sutherland Mayfield and emigrated to Texas. His intentions were to establish a residence, file claim for the land grant, build an abode and send for his family. [8]
Once in Texas, John Henry decided to settle in Nashville-on-the-Brazos, which was the capital for Robertson's colony in the 1830's. [9][4] John Henry filed for his grant. Nashville was on the SE bank of the Brazos River. It was named in honor of Robertson's place of birth, Nashville, Tennessee.
While in San Antonio buying supplies, John Henry heard news and talk of the Texas revolution, which interested him. [10] John Henry signed up to be a volunteer with Col. George English Company. He was the only member of the English Company to remain in San Antonio and continue to volunteer to join Col. Davy Crockett in defense of the Alamo.
John Henry Dillard was killed March 6, 1836 in the Battle of the Alamo. A memorial is in San Fernando Cathedral. [11][12]
