On January 1, 1884, he received a patent, # US291165 for an improved vehicle wheel. [1] His granddaughter, Jennie Featherston Davis, says that he had a "carriage manufactory". The 1860 census confirms this and gives his age as 34.
Note: Info given by Mary Ida Dillard - Gregory Morris Dillard was the son of Gregory Dillard, a sea captain. He lived with an uncle named Niclas, who was "Old Nick". He sent him out to plant peas and he planted them in a hollow stump and left. He worked his was up to Pittsburg and then down to Mississippi.
Henry Dillard, Jr., of York, Ala., said that Gregory Morris Dillard was born in 1824, in Gloucester Co., Va. He lived next door to Augustus Washington and got some furniture that had been Washington's.
The 1900 Census also shows his birth as January 1824 and that he was a "hotel proprietor".
He was a private in the Confederate army, 1st Regiment, Miss. Infantry, State Troops, (Foote's), Company B
A letter from C.D. Featherston states: Mr. Boswell's grandfather was Arthur Jackson Boswell. He and Mr. Gregory Dillard were prisoners in a prisoner of war camp in Illinois (he thinks Rantoul, but is not certain). This Union guard gave them an order, "you revel s.o.b.'s get in here", whereupon one of the two men pulled a derringer (an easily concealed one shot pistol) out of his coat and shot and instantly killed the guard. The two men were tried, but never convicted because it could not be proved which one did the shooting. They both came back to Noxubee County and died without ever revealing which one actually did the killing.
