Taswell Gray's father, William Gray came from Scotland and settled in Tennessee. He was a saddler by trade and lived to be 100 years old. Taswell's mother, Ann Gray lived to be 95.

Priscilla was born in Virginia and came from Irish descent. On the 1860 Iowa Census she listed her occupation as a "Weaver".
