Research Notes

This profile formerly applied the middle name William. Since no known record uses that middle name, it has been removed from the profile.

Much about James Dillon remains unknown. Research is on-going. A man by this name appears on the Franklin County, Virginia Settlement Map, dated as 1755, which would have been Bedford Co. at that time. His location is shown as close to Bonbrook along Maggodee Creek. Land records associated with Maggodee Creek have failed to identify any land owned by Dillon's in this location and it is known that the Settlement Map does contain a few errors.

WikiTree profiles for several Dillon family members, especially the older generations, are conflated. Multiple merges are required to correct the situation.

Biography

James Dillon was probably born about 1726 perhaps in Goochland Co., VA. His eldest children appear to have been born around 1748/49 in Cumberland Co. (formed from Goochland in 1749).

This profile shows two wives for James, but both are unconfirmed by any type of record. At present, his family history is inadequately described.

We do know that James Dillon was living in 1789 on Blackwater River, by virtue of his deed of trust to Stephen Smith. And it does appear he may have been a miller, based on road orders that mention 'Dillon's old mill' on Blackwater River. This river formed the boundary between Bedford Co. and Henry Co. until 1786. If James was living on the south side of the river before 1786, his records would be in Henry Co. prior to the formation of Franklin. Franklin County tax lists for 1786-1803 include at least one, and often two, James Dillon's, most likely father and son. Asa, Arthur, Henry, Jesse, John, Samuel and William Dillon are also there. In the years 1789-1799, both James, Sr. and James, Jr. are recorded. In the years 1800-1803 only one James is there, recorded as James, Sr. through 1802. Also, both James are recorded in the southern district (south of Blackwater) 1787-1792, afterwards both men are always in the northern district. This change in districts implies a move across the Blackwater River about 1793. Clearly, this extended family lived on both sides of the river at different times, most likely in the vicinity of Foul Ground Creek and Fox Trap Branch.

Based on tax list information above, 1799 has been used as a tentative date of death for James. That was the last year both James, Sr. and James, Jr. were recorded. Current thinking is that the James, Sr. recorded in 1800-1802 was the son. And a few of the deed records below could well belong with the son as well.

James was born in 1726. He passed away in 1798. [1]

William was born in 1725. He was the son of William Dillon and Mary Robinson. He passed away in 1819. [2]

  • Bedford County, Virginia Personal Property Tax Lists, 1782-1805, Binns Genealogy, 2009; James Dillon is not recorded in any of the tax lists for Bedford Co. during this time. Possibly, the explanation is that he was living south of Blackwater River by 1782, which would have been in Henry Co. until 1786 and then Franklin Co. He may have owned land north of Blackwater but his residence was probably south of the river.

This profile, and two others, probably apply to the same man and need to be merged. Dillon-569, Dillon-875 and Dillon-3877 all show similar birth dates and marriage to Mary Belcher. Also, there is no evidence presented for any middle name - most likely James Dillon was his name. Applicable records for James Dillon are added to Dillon-569 as that is the lowest WikiTree profile number and the other duplicates should eventually merge there.
