Birth: 8 May 1799 Keene, Cheshire County, New Hampshire, USA
Death: 28 Feb 1869 (aged 69) Keene, Cheshire County, New Hampshire, USA

New Hampshire Governor. A native of Keene, New Hampshire, he attended Dartmouth College and graduated in 1814. After building a legal practice, he traveled south in 1819 and served as a legal assistant to the territorial governor of Arkansas, returning in 1823. In 1825, he accompanied General Lafayette while he toured New Hampshire. From 1826-30, he served as a clerk in the New Hampshire State Senate. After his father was elected governor, his political prominence increased significantly. In 1830, he became a cashier at Ashuelot Bank in Keene, and he replaced his father as its president when the elder Dinsmoor passed away. He remained active in politics and became an ally of future President Franklin Pierce. In 1849, he was elected to the first of three one year terms as Governor of New Hampshire, and served until June of 1852. While governor, he reorganized the state militia and backed the state in limiting the power of corporations. After leaving office, he engaged in banking and legal persuits. He died in Keene less than three months shy of his 70th birthday. Bio by: Thomas J Fraser
