Biography
Catherine was a Friend (Quaker)
Catherine or Katharine (several variant spellings appear in the records) was born to John Dixon and Rebecca (Cox) Dixon on "15th day, 8th month, 1744" [translates to 15 Oct 1744] in Chester, Pennsylvania.[1]
Catherine married Robert Phillips in 1767.[2] They first announced their intention to marry at the Kennett monthly meeting, Chester, Pennsylvania, on 12 March 1767.[3] On 12 April 1767, they were given approval to marry after stating their marriage intentions a second time at that monthly meeting.[4] They were then married on 22 April 1767 at Hockessing Meeting House[2] and the marriage was reported as "orderly accomplished" at the next Kennett monthly meeting on 14 May 1767.[5]
Catherine died in 1768 and was buried in Hockessin Friends Cemetery, Hockessin, New Castle County, Delaware, United States of America.[6][7]
Research Notes
One family genealogy[8] reports that Catherine was born on 15 Aug 1744, probably reading the dates in the Quaker records as "new style" dates rather than "old style" pre-1752 dates (see "The 1752 Calendar Change"). The same work also indicates that Catherine died unmarried, apparently overlooking her 1767 marriage to Robert Phillips. This may have resulted in part because her death record[6] lists her surname as Dixon and, uncharacteristically, makes no mention of her married name. Her memorial at Find a Grave[7] is apparently based on this record and also makes no mention of her married name. A similar report appears in "Geneanet Community Trees Index."[9]
The original source page for Katharine's birth[1] gives grandparents (Father's - Henry & Ruth Dixon of Christiana Hundred and Mother's - William & Katherine Cox of the same place), parents (John [b 16, 11, 1717 which translates to 16 JAN 1718] & Rebekah Dixon) and her sibling's birthdates:
