George was born on 5 July 1846 in Great Ayton, Yorkshire, England. He was the son of George Dixon and Alice (Swinburn) Dixon.^[1][2]

In the 1851 census George (age 4) was the son of George Dixon, headmaster of Great Ayton School, Yorkshire, England.^[3]

In the 1861 census George (age 14) was a boarder at the school in Great Ayton, Yorkshire, England.^[4]

In the 1871 census George (age 24) was a Surveyor and living as a boarder of Eliza Kirk's boarding house in Great Ayton, Yorkshire, England.^[5]

When George was 28 he married Martha Ann Newton on 5 May 1875 in Todmorden, Lancashire, England.^[6]
