James Dobbins was born in Ireland in 1712. He died in Rowan County, North Carolina in 1788.[1]
James Dobbins received the following Granville Land Grants in Rowan County[2]
There are two later State Land Grants in Rowan/Iredell County:
Revolutionary War Service: James Dobbins, Service: North Carolina[3] Civil Service (a juror), Patriotic Service (he furnished supplies), Rank: Sergeant (Salisbury District Militia) Birth: c.1730 Death: ante 1791 Rowan Co, North Carolina. Spouse: 1) Anna Skiles Service Source: NCDAR, ROSTER OF SOLS FROM NC IN THE AM REV, P 373 #6913;NC REV WAR PAY VOUCHERS # 117, 699, 6913, 453, ROLL 68.19; LINN, MINS OF THE CT OF PLEAS AND QTR SESSIONS ROWAN CO NC, VOL. 3, P. 50 Residence: 1) County: Rowan,- District: Salisbury District - State: North Carolina
On 5 Feb 1788, James Dobbins, of Rowan County, North Carolina, wrote his will, with bequests to his wife Anna and sons John, Alexander, and Hugh; daughters Mary, wife of John Schoils, Anna, wife of David Cowan, Rosannah, wife of Richard Graham, Elizabeth, Catherine, Margaret, and Rebeccah.[4]
At the time of the Revolutionary War there were at the least three James Dobbins in Rowan County, North Carolina. There was a James Dobbins, son of John. There was this James Dobbins and his son James Dobbins Jr. This James Dobbins was born much earlier than 1730. He lived in the Thyatira Church area of Rowan County. A page from the book "Rowan County, North Carolina Tax Lists 1757-1800, annotated Transcriptions" by Jo White Linn on page 255 lists residents of that area. Included is the household of James Dobbins. The white males of that family are of the ages of 75 and 25. That would have given his date of birth of around 1712. It is possible that his descendants who made the DAR Application fudged his birth date to be able to claim all the Revolutionary War Pay Vouchers as going to him. There was definitely a James Dobbins who served in the Revolutionary War because in his first Estate Papers his heirs said he had pay vouchers for his service. That James Dobbins was not this James Dobbins. He was James Dobbins-687 who died before 7 Aug, 1781 according to Rowan Co, Probate Records. He was a son of John Dobbins-686.[5]
For some reason, there were two Estate Papers for James Dobbins, son of John. The one attached to this James Dobbins actually was papers from James Dobbins-687, son of John Dobbins-686. The first page of those papers references Margaret Hall, former wife of James Dobbins. James Dobbins, son of John married Margaret McKnight. This James Dobbins married Anna Skiles.
J.D. Lewis's database of North Carolina Revolutionary soldiers does not include a James Dobbins in the Rowan County Regiment. It does show a Sergeant David Dobbins in the Rowan County Regiment.[6] It is doubtful this man served in the Salisbury District Brigade. He would have been about 63 years of age in 1776. Very old to be a Minuteman.
