Death of Lady von Haast

The news was received this week by Mr H. F. von Haast of the death of his mother, Lady von Haast, widow of the late Sir Julius von Haast, and eldest daughter of Mr Edward Dobson, C.E. of Christchurch. Lady von Haast lived for many years in Christchurch, where she was well known. Her house was always the centre of a musical circle, she herself being an accomplished pianist. She went to Europe in 1896 after the death of her husband, and travelled in Russia, Poland, Austria, and Italy, and her headquarters for some years have been in Vienna. Mr and Mrs H. F. von Haast were staying with her in Italy during their tour abroad last year. Lady von Haast's death occurred at Rome, where she had been staying for some months. Her son, Mr George von Haast, was with her. There is a bust of Lady von Haast in the New Zealand Academy, the work of a friend.[1]
