Syd was found dead (after failing to come in for dinner) by David Dobson who at the time was 12 years old. It appears Syd, who had been repairing the tractor in the shed, succumb to carbon monoxide poisoning after the barn doors closed in the wind. He was found, tools in hand, underneath the tractor with the engine still idling.
An alternate story of Sydney's death was relayed by Valerie Steiner (David's sister) on a recording made while she, David and Maurice were visiting the old homestead site in Otane. In her recollection Syd was working on the family car (he was taking the Children on a birthday picnic the next day) with only a small window open in the garage.
