Biography

Rufus Dodd was born in 1776 in New jersey to Daniel Dod (b. 1745) and Charity Freeman (b. abt 1748) before the family moved to Pennsylvania before 1779.

After his first wife Hannah Riggs died in 1806 (leaving him three young children), Rufus Dodd m2) to Jemima Hathawy in Oct. 1807. She died in 1809 (leaving no children), and Rufus Dodd then m3) to Hannah Axtel (Daughter of Luther Axtell and Hannah Condit) on June 28, 1810.

The family soon moved from Washington County, Pennsylvania to Knox County, Ohio, then to Linn County, Iowa. Along the way, Rufus and Hannah (Axtell) Dodd had nine more children of their own for a total of 12 children in the family. The oldest, daughter Eunice (Dodd) McKnight was 28 years old when the youngest, Rhoda Jane Dodd, was born in February, 1829 in Ohio.
