Biography

Phebe Dodd was born in 1759 in Virginia Colony. She passed away on 28 October 1855 in Estill County, Kentucky[1] and is buried in Witt Cemetery, Estill County.[2]

Birth

No birth record has been found for Phebe. Her application for widow's pension filed 18 July 1839 states she was 80 years old. This would give her a birth year of 1759.

Marriage

Phebe married Elisha Witt on 17 July 1781 in Albemarle County, Virginia.[3]

Children

Elisha and Phebe had ten children who were named in the Revolutionary War pension application: William (b 1783), Anna (b 1784), Charles (b 1786), Abner (b 1789), Elisha, Jr. (b 1792), Nathan (b 1794), "name missing" (b 1797), David (b 1798), John (b 1801), and Silas (b 1803). There is no evidence to support more than ten children.

The list of children presented to the court with Phebe's application for widow's pension was a list prepared some years before his death by Elisha himself. It was preserved in a hymnal which at that time was in the possession of son Silas Witt. The list was damaged, and the name with the birth date of 19 April 1797 was torn off. It is said by some to have been Rachel and by others to have been Samuel.

Persons named in Elisha's will dated 15 November 1835 are: wife Phebe; daughter Nancy; sons Elisha, Silas, David, and Charles (who was named executor but did not inherit); grandsons Milton Wilt & Washington Holeman. The land on which Elisha was living, "the homeplace," was left to wife Phebe and daughter Nancy, with reversion to son Elisha after their deaths.

Nancy, or Anna, was married to William Holeman on 21 September 1814. George Washington Holeman, named in Elisha's will, was their eldest son. In July 1825, William Holeman was tried and found guilty of stealing 34 gallons of brandy. He was sentenced to one year in the penitentiary. Nancy filed for divorce in August 1825, which was granted. Nancy was still living with her children in 1830,[4] but by 1835 when Elisha wrote his will, she had moved home with her parents.

I found an extensive genealogy on this Dodd line from the Owens Family Genealogy. It begins with John Dod who came from Liverpool, England who married Martha Unknown abt 1750. Martha's maiden name may have been Hughes, Hawes or Hawse. Mr. Owens cannot make a clean and definite connection to the John Dod from England but there is a John Dodd who died in Nelson Cty abt 1813. There is a record of a Moses Hughes that had a daughter named Martha and several sons. Of interest is that men named Hughes witnessed John Dodd's will. The names of these men match the sons of Moses Dodd. John had the following children: Josias abt 1750,Sarrah abt 1752,Joseph abt 1755, Phebe abt 1764, Nancy abt 1766, William abt 1769(my GGrandfather). John Dodd's will is dated March 29, 1803. Phebe Dodd married Elisha Witt in Albermarle Cty July 17, 1781. There is more if you like.
