Peter Antwis was born in 1840 in Liverpool.[1] He was living with his parents Samuel Dodd and Mary Antwis and grandmother in the 1841 census. He married Harriet Copley in 1863 in New Zealand.[2]
He was in a ship wreck, the cutter Advance, on which he was the master, which foundered in August 1864.[3][4]
He then became the Captain of the Maid of Kent.[5] The Maid of Kent was a 30 ton schooner, 75 feet long built in 1863.[6]
The Maid of Kent went missing after leaving Napier in February 1865.[7][8] The last report of her was leaving Wellington on March 7th for Kaipara. A captain who left at the same time as the Maid of Kent reported very heavy gales[9] He took shelter in a bay while the Maid of Kent continued. A section of her stern washed up on the west coast of Northland several months later.[10][11][12]
Peter's wife was pregnant with their first child at the time he went missing. She named him Peter Antwis after his father.
