NOTE

William Dodd of Loudoun County, Virginia is not the father of Jesse and David Dodd of Johnston/Wake Counties in North Carolina. Y-DNA testing of descendants of William Dodd's sons Edward and Thomas and of descendants of Jesse and David Dodd of North Carolina has established that they do not share a common Y-chromosome and thus are not related or descended from a common ancestor.

Biography

William was a Friend (Quaker)

William may have come from the Newark/Kinnett Monthly Meeting in Chester County, Pennsylvania[1]

William Dodd from Pennsylvania was granted 450 acres of land in Loudoun County, Virginia, on December 10, 1742. William received 450 acres because he brought with him a wife, Catherine, and seven children.[2] He and wife Catherine requested membership in the Fairfax Monthly Meeting of the Friends, in Loudoun County, Virginia, on December 28, 1746. They were accepted as members, however their membership was always in jeopardy because of their acts or acts of their children. Catherine, was received by the women Friends on April 8, 1746. [3]

William was complained of in June 1747 for encouraging the courtship of his daughter, Ann, by a man not of the Society.[4]He made a long written offering for `encouraging the visits of a man not of our society in the courtship to my daughter, Ann, and promised to be more careful for time to come,' which was accepted July 27, 1747.[5] Ann married out of the unity to a Mr. Richardson, a non member, in April of 1747.[3]

William's acknowledgement for 'excess of Drinking Strong Liquors and Behaved my Self Very Disagreeably' was read in to the Minutes of the Fairfax Monthly Meeting on 27th 12mo 1747.[6]

William was again complained of for `drinking and card playing' by Monoquesey, Maryland, preparative meeting in 1751 and again in 1755[7]; his acknowledgement was accepted for both offenses.[8][9]

His daughter, Lydia, was married out of unity in 1758 and was disowned January 31, 1759.[3]

His son, Edward is said to have married a woman named Mary, of Hopewell Monthly Meeting. He was also in trouble and was disowned on May 31, 1755.[3]

His son, John, was disowned for marriage out of unity on April 24, 1762.[3]

His son, Thomas was disowned on February 28, 1756 for attending a marriage out of unity, but Thomas was reinstated on August 26, 1758 and married Sarah Sample in 1760.[3]

"In addition to the above there are records that shows that William bought some more land in Loudoun County in 1758. Then in 1760 he sold 150 acres. In 1761, William, bought 4 1/2 acres near Leesburg, Virginia, his intentions being to develop and sell lots at a profit. And in 1762 William sold 1/2 acre of the land near Leesburg. The last record of William and Catherine was the sale of some land in Leesburg to Craven Peyton in September 1768."[10]

William and Catherine Dodd had at least 8 children, Ann, Jane, Edward, Margaret, Lydia, Thomas, John, and Jesse. Of the children, Thomas and Jesse went to Union County, South Carolina before the Revolutionary War. Margaret married George Norman and they went to Union County, South Caroline before 1761, and before her three brothers. George Norman and the Dodd brothers all bought land on or near Frenchmans Creek of Enoree River in Union County. John stayed in Loudoun County and some of his descendants went to Kentucky and further west. Most likely William and Catherine died in Virginia.[11]

Research Notes

See Dodd researcher Anne Crocker's notes from 2010 for some details of her research at that point. Is anyone in contact with Anne to know how her research progressed?
The reference on pg 383 (HathiTrust digital image) of Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, Vol VI may be in reference to William's son Edward and family.
There are two references to a man named Jesse Dodd on page 487 (HathiTrust digital image) of Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, Vol VI. Neither supports the idea that Jesse might have migrated to the Carolinas nor that Jesse was the son of William's wife Catherine. All other references on the page identify both Wm & Catherine as the parents.
