Biography

The death is announced this week of the Rev. Canon Thomas Francis Dodd, in his seventy-forth year. The deceased gentleman was ordained a deacon in 1881 and priest in 1882. He was occupied in the East Coast mission in 1881-83, and was vicar of Balclutha from 1893 to1903, when he became vicar of the Taieri districts. he was made a canon of St Paul's, Dunedin, in 1895. '..It has been my privilege to have known the Iate Canon Dodd for more than twenty years, and I remember the mission visits he paid to Owaka and the outlying districts beyond Catlins River, and I can say that we have often, in crossing that river, been exposed to considerable danger. I remember on one occasion we paid a visit to a sick man. and it was about mid-winter. A snowstorm and gale sprang up and darkness came on, and we were numb with the intense cold but he, like a brave soldier, stood firmly to his sense of duty, and I can truly say he never neglected an opportunity to help and succor to the best of his ability those who were in need. Such was the character of Thomas Francis Dodd.'
