Biography

PHEBE DODD, born 11 Jan 1765 daughter of Stephen Dodd and Ruth Peck;[1] Phebe died at Spencer, New York, 10 Nov 1826;[2] married about 1786, JOSEPH BARKER, born at Methuen, 8 Sep 1762 son of Moses Barker and Lydia Gutterson;[3] Joseph died at Spencer, New York, 22 Jul 1828.[4] Joseph Barker had a second marriage to Hannah Hill.

Probate

In his will written 1838 (month and day not in the will book entry) and proved 22 August 1838, Joseph Barker of Spencer bequeathed to beloved wife Hannah the property she owned prior to the marriage. His three youngest daughters Dorcas, Clarissa, and Abigail receive fifty acres of land on the north side of the farm on which he resides except for a piece bequeathed to daughter Mary. Daughter Phebe receives bed and bedding. Daughter Polly receives the house lot occupied by Aaron Wells and the money owed by Aaron Wells. Son Joel Barker receives half an acre of land. The remainder of the estate is to be divided equally among Moses, Phebe, Lydia, Betsey, and Nancy. Elihu Butts and George K. Hall were named executors.[5]

  3. Enoch, not named in his father's will so perhaps died young and unmarried
  4. Phebe married Anson Andrews
  5. Elizabeth "Betsey" married Jotham Vorhis
  6. Mary "Polly" married Aaron Wells
  7. Joel married first Hannah who was not identified and married second Polly Darrow
  8. Nancy married John Butts
  9. Dorcas died unmarried in 1831
  10. Clarissa married Henry E. Forsyth
  11. Abigail married George Snell and Ezra English
