Josiah Dodd was a Virginia colonist.

Josiah was born about 1740 in Virginia, perhaps in Albemarle County (Amherst County formed from Albemarle in 1761). He was the son of Richard Dodd and Ann Cunningham.

Josiah married Mary Luttrell about 1774 in Amherst County, Virginia Colony. They had seven children: Martha, William, James M., John, Josiah, Richard, and Sarah "Sally" Dodd.

Josiah appears on the Tennessee Early Tax List Records in 1804, Capt. McMullin's Company, Knox County, with 185 acres on Sinking Creek, no white polls and 1 black poll. His sons, James and William, are listed there also; each with one white poll, no acreage.[1] Note that his brother-in-law William Luttrell also owned land on Sinking Creek.

Death

Josiah probably died the latter part of 1810. His will was dated 15 December 1809 in Knox County, Tennessee. The date it was proved in court was not available, but the inventory of his estate, dated 15 January 1811, was returned to the Knox County court in the April Session 1811.[2]

In his will Josiah bequeaths his entire estate for her life or widowhood to "my beloved wife, Mary Dodd." At her remarriage or death, the estate is to be divided among "my children." Wife Mary and sons William and James Dodd named as executors.

The final settlement of the estate took place in 1819. On 26 February 1819, William and James Dodd, executors, Mary Dodd, widow, children Josiah Dodd, James Dodd, Richard Dodd, and William Leak (husband of Sarah "Sally" Dodd), sold land In Knox County, Tennessee to Jacob Roberts, husband of Martha "Patsy" Dodd (daughter of Josiah and Mary). The indenture was signed by William, James, Mary, Josiah, John and Richard Dodd and Mary Leak [s/b Sally Leak].[3]
