Biography

There is a John S. Dodd listed in the United States Census, 1830 in Fayette County, Georgia. He was shown to have in the household; a child under five, a male of twenty something and a female of twenty something which is a match for this family as seen in an image of the original census.[1]

There was a Jno S Dodd listed in the United States Census, 1840 in Capt Moselys District, Fayette County, Georgia. There was shown to be three males under five, one male under ten, one male under fifteen, one male thirty something, one female under ten and one female thirty something which is a perfect match for the family as seen in an image of the original census.[2]

John S Dodd was enumerated at Fayette, Fayette County, Georgia for the October 28, United States Census, 1850. He was noted as born 1809 in South Carolina. He was a farmer with $3800 of value in real estate as seen in this image of the original census. Also included in the household are female Elizabeth H Dodd, male James L Dodd, female Elizabeth Dodd, male Thomas E Dodd, male Francis M Dodd, male Asa S Dodd, male George Dodd, female Nancy Dodd, female Ludercka A Dodd, female Setha A Dodd, male John D Dodd and female Sarah L Dodd.[3]

J S Dodd was enumerated at Fayetteville, Fayette County, Georgia for the July 12, United States Census, 1860. He was noted as born 1811 in South Carolina. He was noted as a farmer and pastor and had $5600 in value of real estate and $4600 in value of personal estate as seen in the image of the original census. Also included in the household are female E H Dodd, male A L Dodd, male G M Dodd, female L A M Dodd, male M F Johnson, male J D Dodd and female S L Dodd.[4] He is also enumerated in this census as owning eight slaves[5]

John S Dodd was enumerated at Fayetteville Post Office, Fayette County, Georgia for the July 21, United States Census, 1870. He was noted as born 1808-1809 in South Carolina and a farmer. He had $400 in value of real estate and $1000 in personal assets as seen in this image of the original census. Also included in the household are female Elizabeth H Dodd, female Margaret Hill and female Myram Hill.[6]

John S K O (Rev) Dodd was enumerated as self at District 1204, Campbell County, Georgia for the June 16, United States Census, 1880. He was noted as a farmer, born 1809 in South Carolina and married as seen in this image of the original census. Also included in the household are wife Elizabeth H Dodd and friend Marragett Miller.[7]

John Sample Dodd was preacher for many years at Bethesda Baptist Church in Riverdale, Georgia. Ada Louise Hughie Johns told of his portrait hanging in that church. On April 6, 2007, I talked with Laverne Robinson Oakes, who said that Bethesda Baptist Church burned. Laverne said the portrait also hung in Corinth Baptist Church, and the portrait was lost when that church burned.[8]

John S Dodd was listed as the father of Thomas Edward Dodd who died March 7, 1925 at Chestnut Logg, Douglasville, Douglas County, Georgia. The mother was listed as Elizabeth Word.[9]

As listed in the Find A Grave Index,[10] Elder John Sample Dodd is buried at Bethsaida Baptist Church Cemetery in Fulton County, Georgia.[11]
